Care Plus® Anti-Insect DEET spray 50% is the strongest insect-repellent product for the skin. Suitable for tropical destinations (malaria, dengue and yellow fever risks) as well as European regions. The active substance DEET is effective against biting and stinging insects and also against ticks. DEET is most effective against (malaria) mosquitoes and horseflies, effective against ticks, and reasonably effective against large horseflies, gnats and midges. Deet products must be applied to the uncovered skin.

What is the average time for using a Care Plus® DEET anti-insect product?
One packaging unit is sufficient for 2 to 3 weeks daily use in accordance with the prescription, only when wearing UV-resistant clothing and when the product is applied on the uncovered skin. This guideline can be applied to every packaging unit. (With the exception of Care Plus DEET anti-insect spray 40% of 100ml, this product is sufficient for 3,5 to 5 weeks).
Can an insect-repellent product containing DEET used with small children?
To be cautious, it is advised to avoid products which contain more than 30% of DEET with small children under 2 years of age. Do not rub the children’s hands, this will prevent that DEET will contact the senses of the child (e.g. mouth or eyes). Especially for children there is Care Plus® Anti-Insect for Kids available.
Can an insect-repellent product containing DEET used by pregnant women?
Recent research concludes that DEET is safe to use in the second and third trimester of the pregnancy. DEET up to 30% can be used during the first trimester. Minimalize the use makes sure you are really safe.
How long does the insect-repellent product containing DEET last?
The percentage of DEET in the insect-repellent products determine the duration of the product. For example, the Care Plus® products:
- Care Plus® DEET anti-insect gel 30% = up to 5,5 hours
- Care Plus® DEET anti-insect spray 40% = up to 8 hours
- Care Plus® DEET anti-insect lotion 50% = up to 10 hours
Which side effects do the insect-repellent products containing DEET have?
In rare cases, the Care Plus® DEET anti-insect gel, spray, and lotion can provoke a skin reaction, which can be redness or blisters. If this is the case, you must immediately stop the use of the insect-repellent products containing DEET. The same is advised with other products containing N, N diethyl-m-toluamide. Please be beware that DEET products and plastic do not go well together, e.g. your glasses.
Are insect-repellent products containing DEET able to affect plastic?
The insect-repellent products containing DEET are indeed able to affect certain materials. Please avoid contact with plastics and varnished surfaces (such as spectacle frames, cameras, tabletops, and clothing).
Insect-repellent products have different percentages of DEET, how do I know which one to take?
We advise a DEET percentage between 30% and 50%, because of its effectiveness against insects. A percentage of more than 50% does not have a surplus value, whereas less than 30% requires the product to be applied more often. DEET is most effective between 30% and 50%. The duration of DEET products depends on the concentration of this particular substance.
Can DEET be harmful to health when it is used on the long term?
When used in accordance to the prescription, products with DEET are not harmful to someone’s health. However, it could be possible when there is a hypersensitivity towards one of the components.
I take malaria pills, so why should I use an insect-repellent product containing DEET and sleep underneath a mosquito net?
The use of malaria pills reduce the chance of malaria. Despite this, they do not prevent insect stings which are caused by stinging insects, which are capable of transferring diseases (e.g. Dengue Fever). To protect yourself against these insect stings with their diseases, it is advisable to sleep underneath an impregnated mosquito net. Then you are protected while you are sleeping and therefore the use of DEET becomes unnecessary.
When I go to the toilet during the night, does it become necessary to apply an insect-repellent product containing DEET?
Yes, this is necessary. This is because you are protected against insects by your mosquito net during the night. You are not protected anymore whenever you go outside the mosquito net to go to the toilet. Apply the insect-repellent product containing DEET is then a necessity. Another solution is to bring a TravelJohn by Care Plus (disposable urinal) in the impregnated mosquito net.
How do I combine DEET with sunscreen products?
Sunscreen products are always applied 30 minutes before you expose your skin to the sun. After these 30 minutes, the DEET product can be applied 10 minutes before going into the sun. Do not apply Care Plus® insect-repellent DEET products when it contains alcohol! Next to that the SPF of your sunscreen decreases after a DEET product is applied. That is why we advise you to choose a sunscreen with a higher SPF.
What do I do when I use sunscreen every 3 hours? Do I have to apply DEET products again?
First we must avoid a misunderstanding: applying sunscreen to the skin more often does not lengthen the time which can be spend in the sun. At the beginning of the day it is advisable to apply Care Plus® SkinSaver (SPF30+), followed by a DEET insect-repellent product. It is not necessary to apply new sunscreen for the rest of the day. If this happens, it would reduce the effectiveness of the DEET product, because a new layer is applied to your skin. This process would cause a “brewing effect”, which would be harmful for your skin.
I swim several times a day, is it advisable to use DEET afterwards?
Anti-Insect products are not water resistant. It is advisable to apply DEET every time you go out of the water.
Should I apply DEET on the entire body or only on uncovered body parts?
We recommend that you should apply the Care Plus® Anti-Insect products on uncovered body parts sparely and with caution, thus meaning not underneath your clothing. In addition, the products should not be applied to scrapes, wounds, or joints which have folds in the skin. Thus meaning that the products should not be used on the back of the knee and the elbow.
How does an insect-repellent product with DEET work?
The productive substance diethyl-m-toalumide, abbreviated DEET, works on the nervous system of the insects. The mosquitos get quite disorientated which disables them to sting. As a result they will search for another victim.
